What’s a child worth? What value can be placed on a child’s life? For the parents, their child’s worth is inestimable.
But if value is determined by Jan Schlichtmann, the personal injury attorney in the movie, “A Civil Action,” then a child has no value.
“In the calculus of personal injury law, a dead child is worth the least of all.”
What did Jesus say about children?
Mark 10:15-16: ” I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.” And he took the children in his arms, put his hands on them and blessed them.
Unicef reports,”One in every fourteen Haitian new borns will die before their first birthday. Also, “Haiti has far and away the Western Hemisphere’s highest death rate of under-5-year-olds.”
What causes such high mortality? Measles, fever, dysentery, unclean water, malnutrition, and no medical care, such as vaccinations.
Third world nations are dubbed “third world” for a reason. We see the pictures on TV, the sad and malnourished little faces. We know. “Another 300 babies died today,” the reporter tells us.
Sometimes I think: “It’s sad and terrible, but it’s not my child, and I’m thankful that is isn’t. And I can’t fall apart over the deplorable conditions of every impoverished country. I have a life to live.” True enough.
Still, is a Haitian child worth less than an American child?
Isn’t every child created in God’s image. Each is equally valuable, and they all have the same worth, at least to the creator they do.
“I can’t solve their problems, or change their conditions, or fix what’s broken.”
Yes, but there is something you can do, and so can I.
Tomorrow, at the Southeast Church of Christ in Friendswood, Texas we step forward and rise up to help some of Haiti’s kids. Sponsoring a child for Christian education not only provides the three R’s but also offers medical care, access to a clinic, and annual check ups with Doctors, Nurses, Optometrists, Dentists, and other medical services.
I can’t help them all, but I can help one. Will you help one of Haiti’s kids? Come join us in the morning at 8:30 or 10:45. Or contact: http://www.hopeforhaitischildren.org
Which one would you like to help?
